Granadean Rabesque by Jose Joya (1958)
The "Granadean Arabesque," a masterpiece by National Artist Jose Joya, is a horizontal abstract painting that includes large strokes and swipes of impasto blended with sand and features various shades of yellow. Joya's creativity as a mixed-media artist and a pioneer in visual art in the Philippines is exemplified by this masterful execution of texture and composition.

Yellow is the brightest hue apparent to the human eye, falling in between orange and green in the visible light spectrum. It's the colour of ripeness in bananas and mangoes, the Beatles' Yellow Submarine, the "smiley" face emoji, or Van Gogh's starry nights and sunflowers. It's also the color of ripeness in bananas and mangoes, the Beatles' Yellow Submarine, the "smiley" face emoji, or Van Gogh's starry nights and sunflowers. It's also the hue of graduation season in the rows of blooming sunflowers at UP Diliman.

This 1958 oil on canvas, measuring 305 cm by 118 cm, was one of Joya's works seen at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 1964, where the Philippines were represented. This was the Philippines' first participation in the world's longest-running biennale and the most significant showcase for modern art and the international avant-garde.

Fernando Zóbel donated the artwork to the Ateneo Art Gallery, which now owns it. Joya, an abstract artist who worked as a painter, printmaker, mixed-media artist, and ceramicist, has made significant contributions to the country's art scene.

Philippine landscapes, such as green rice paddies and golden harvest fields, influenced many of Joya's paintings of harmonious colors. His use of rice paper in collages emphasized transparency, which is a typical feature in folk art.

Joya was also president of the Art Association of the Philippines and chair of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts' visual arts section. In 1961, he received the Republic Cultural Heritage Prize, in 1971, he received the Patnubay ng Kalinangan Award, and in 1990, he received the Asean Artist Award. Joya was named National Artist for Visual Arts posthumously in 2003.
